About
Giraffe Royal
Giraffe Royal is an independent visual theatre company based in Estonia, working at the intersection of physical theatre, clowning and non-verbal performance. The company develops a living artistic lineage built through decades of international practice, combining stage, street and educational formats. Its work focuses on presence, embodied storytelling and direct connection with audiences beyond language.
TIMELINE
  • 1986 → Avant-Garde Beginnings
In the final decades of the Soviet period, the ensemble stood at the forefront of visual and street theatre innovation. At a time when artistic exchange was tightly restricted, the company represented its country abroad — an exceptional cultural achievement. This was the beginning of a theatre language built on freedom, risk and direct audience encounter.
  • 2000 → Across Europe
Paris. London. European stages. Years of immersion in the heart of contemporary performance culture. Then a deliberate withdrawal from the centres into Estonia — to analyse, consolidate and distil decades of experience into a unified method. This was the era of mastery, research and silent construction.
  • 2020 → Living Legacy
After decades of touring, experimentation and creation, the productions stand complete. What remains is responsibility: to protect, refine and pass forward a living theatrical lineage that cannot be archived in books. This is the moment of transition — from creators to carriers.
Body • Presence • Audience contact
Non-verbal dramaturgy, physical precision and poetic imagery form the core of our practice. Each performance grows from live interaction with audiences and long-term research into visual theatre traditions.
